触れられないことが、岩⾈をより美しくした。

記憶の岩⾈は23年の歳⽉で脚⾊に脚⾊を重ね、現実以上の像へと膨張していたからだ。

A Ritual to Understand the Rock Boats|Refined Native-Sense Revision
What is beauty?
The minds of others, the contents of a box, a distant landscape, the continuation of a dream—
things that surely must have existed, yet resist my grasp.
It is precisely these things I feel drawn to: to imagine, to reach for, and to work with my hands in order to understand them.
In Minamisatsuma City, Kagoshima prefecture, two stone boats rest in the mountains near my grandparents’ home—one large, one small.
When I was a child, my sister and I climbed onto them with our grandfather, playing in the speckled sunlight beneath the trees.
On the way back, he whispered, “This must stay a secret.”
This scene, sealed in silence, replayed itself over the years and became increasingly beautiful each time.
Thirteen years later, upon his passing, I mentioned the boats—yet no one around me had ever seen them.
Boats known only to us.
That possibility gave the memory a mythic hue, allowing the image to precede existence itself.
I later learned that the stone boats were considered one of the region’s Seven Mysteries.
Map in hand, I entered the mountains again but found nothing.
Strangely, their absence reassured me.
Not being able to touch them made the stone boats even more beautiful.
In recent years, I discovered that the site is now pinned on Google Maps.
The instant its location became certain, I felt a simultaneous rush of anticipation and disappointment.
The stone boats I remembered had expanded through twenty-three years of embellishment, outgrowing reality and gleaming beyond it.
Painting became a way to chase its outline.
But the more I drew, the less it resembled a physical form—becoming a mark, a prayer, an emblem, instead.
Eventually, the boats gave way to the studio itself.
Memory overwrote reality; reality sank into layers of memory.
This reciprocal movement became the ritual of making.
The circular installation, A Ritual to Understand the Rock Boats, shown at GALERIE PARIS in August 2023, is the sediment of that restless exchange between recollection and what is.
The boats not yet found, the boats that may once have existed, and the boats that continually form beneath my hands—
all of them exist here simultaneously.
In the near future, I may return to search for them again.
The boats I meet then will no longer be the ones from back then.
And yet, I believe that the time spent continually reaching out in an effort to understand is, for me, the stone boats itself.
